North Bennet Street School, Boston, MA seeks a part-time teaching assistant for its Bookbinding Department—a two-year, full-time bench bookbinding program with a complementary program of short-term courses and bookbinding workshops. Teaching duties will begin in September, 2009; approximately 7-8 hours per week. 

The successful candidate will be an accomplished bookbinder with traditional binding skills. Field experience in book repair and conservation is preferred. 

Eight students are accepted annually to begin the full-time program.  Classes meet from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, September through May, in a well equipped bindery.

  1. North Bennet Street School is pleased to announce that Martha Kearsley of Portland Maine will join the Bookbinding Program as Assistant Instructor. Martha, who is a graduate of Haverford College and North Bennet Street School, brings her extensive experience in bookbinding and conservation to strengthen an already renowned curriculum.

    Martha has owned and operated the Strong Arm Bindery for the past 10 years, and also worked as a contract book conservator for Harvard. She will offer part time instruction on book and paper treatments to the students in the two year course which is the only full time bench program for hand bookbinding in the United States.
